Week 6 Day 1 - Monday, Sept 30 - Homework

1. Work on final touches to Project 1. Final critique of Project 1 scheduled for Monday, Oct 7 11:30am. Files should be submitted on a USB stick.

File structure should be labeled and organized as follows:


>>Main Project folder with naming structure: FullName_Project1_ART370
>>"Design Files" folder (with native program files, ie Illustrator, Photoshop, etc)
>>"Final Presentation" folder (single PDF of 10 screens + prototype file)
>>"Process Docs" folder (with PDF or JPG scan of initial sketches + text content brainstorming, mind mapping, etc.)

USB drive must be submitted by start of class session (Monday at 11:30am). Late work (even 1 min late) will be subjected to penalties.

Week 4 Day 1 - Monday, Sept 16 - Homework

1. Continue to work on Design Layout for Project 1. MidPoint Critique is scheduled for next week, Monday, Sept 23, 11:30am. Rough designs layout for at least 10 screens are due in PDF format.

 2. Complete term project proposal and rough concept sketches for review next class, Wednesday, Sept 18. Required proposal documents include, PDF of project proposal (use template), relevant mind maps, thumbnail sketches and/or inspirational imagery. 

Class Exercise: Ken Burns Slideshow + 10 sec animation


Based on the techniques and tools shown in today's After Effects demo, complete the following visual exercises for review at end of Monday's class (2:30pm), Sept 23.


1. Ken Burns Effect Exercise
Using the panning and zooming technique coined by documentary filmmaker, Ken Burns, create a visual slideshow of 10 photographs. Consider your choice in initial and final photographic croppings of each image. You may ONLY use Scale, Anchor Point and Opacity keyframes (no position keyframes are allowed in this exercise). Each photograph should be visible in your composition for at least 5 seconds each.

2. 10 Second Vector Animation
Using a vector illustrator file in After Effects (import as composition), create a 10 second animation that utilizes 20 different vector layers, with varying transformation keyframes in a single AE composition (HDV 720 29.97).

Render both exercises as H.264

Target Audience Research Survey Questions

Use this list of survey questions as a reference point in collecting user research this weekend. Be sure you have some sort of documentation in response (printed form, online survey, etc, tape recorded interview, etc).


General Background Information

  • How old are you? 
  • What is your gender? 
  • What town/city do you live in? 
  • Current Schooling (Preschool/Kindergarden, Elementary (Grade 1-5), Junior High (Grade 6-8) High school (9-12), Other?


Health Habits/Behavior

  • What is you opinion on fruits and vegetables?
  • How many servings of fruit do you eat on a daily basis?
  • How many servings of vegetables do you eat on a daily basis?
  • Do you use your app when you shop for food?
  • How would your rank your knowledge about healthy habits (nutrition and/or exercise)? 
  • 3- Extremely Knowledgable, 2- Somewhat Knowledgeable, 1- Not Knowledgeable
  • If you answered, 2- Somewhat Knowledgeable, 1- Not Knowledgeable to the previous questions, would be interested in learning more?
  • How (who, where) did you learn about healthy habits (nutrition and/or exercise)?

Technological Habits/Behavior

  • What type of technological devices do you use frequently?
  • Indicate how much time you spend a day using technological devices (tv, streaming video device, video games, computer, smart phone or device, etc)? Ranking system example: 0-2 hrs, 2-4hrs, 4-6hrs, 6 hrs or more?
  • What type of devices do you own or have access to? 
  • Do you own your own smartphone or device? If so what is the make and model (ie iPhone 4S)
  • If you answered no to the previous question, do you have access to a smartphone or device (via family, friend, work, school)? Be specific?
  • Does your parent or guardian have duration limitation or content limitation in regards to smart phone usage?
  • Why do you use a smart phone?
  • How often do you use it? When do you use it?
  • What are the top 3 most frequent tasks you use daily on the smartphone/device?
  • How did you accomplish those tasks before having a smart phone/device?
  • How often do you download free apps? Paid apps?
  • Do you prefer using devices, individual or with a group (family and/or friends)?
  • Where do you use the device most often (home, schools, car, etc)?
